When sidewalks in Seoul require remodeling, redoing or repairing, they lay carpet. Temporarily, to cover the bare ground. It keeps your shoes from getting dirty, and adds to the curiosity quotient in Korea.
We stopped and smelled the roses on our walk to the Post Office today.

That carpet stuff is was annoying, though, because it gets all tangled and ripped and then you just end up with dirty shoes anyway. But it is definitely a Korean innovation.
