Capitol in the Capital

Two interns of Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah gave us a tour of the Capitol, home to the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives.

We parked the car at Union Station, a short walk from the Capitol.

This room is called the crypt. It was designed as the final resting place for the remains of George Washington.  He didn't want to be on display. He is buried in Mt. Vernon.

Each state gets two statues to represent their state. Hawaii had one of the coolest.

Rebecca is standing on the center star which is the division of NW NE SW SE of Washington D.C.

Lincoln is missing an ear, indicating his sensitivity to the needs of the hearing impaired.

The Father of our country.

Nancy Pelosi has an office down this corridor.

Can you find George?

This frieze was painted by 3 different artists beginning in the 1800s and the last portion completed in the 1950s.

The first artist was allowed to put his self portrait on any of the historical figures so he painted his face on this baby--moustache and all.

The next artist slipped his face into the bark of this tree.

My 9th great grandfather was William Bradford of Pilgrim/Mayflower fame.
His image is the one between the book holder and the bald man.

Ronald Reagan was California's choice, installed in 2008.

Susan B. Anthony sharing a block of marble with two other suffragettes.

The first Senate Chamber used until 1859.

This portrait of Washington is hanging in the original Senate Chambers and is believed to best represent his likeness.

Utah's choice was Brigham Young. The other was Philo T. Farnsworth, the inventor of television.

The Supreme Court

Actually it is 1 Brendon and 1 Ann.
A delicious dinner was had by all

How fun that you are related to William Bradford! The guy holding the book in that Mayflower picture, William Brewster, is my husband's 10th great grandfather. Brewster was the religious leader and Bradford was the political leader.
