Chestnuts Roasting
Walking back to our apartment tonight with my scarf wrapped securely about my mug to keep out the bone-numbing chill, I spy one of my favorite Saturday night street vendors. The husband and wife are sitting in the back of their truck. He's peeling and she's roasting--don't know about the open fire, but they are GOOD! I eat one right then and there, fed to me by Rebecca, because my hands are full of freshly laundered white shirts and our Kaesan English class materials. One drawback--no salt. But once home, I get out the kosher salt and using the tiny bird spoon (it isn't a spoon to feed birds, there's a bird on the end of the spoon) and split the chestnuts in half and sprinkle them with salt. It ALMOST makes it worth the freezing cold to have freshly roasted chestnuts--a bargain at 12 for 3000W about 2.50 a bag.
